MAGOMA HOUSE draws its profound inspiration from the ancient, time-honored game of Kalaha.
This project, initially imagined and designed as a visual identity for an upscale, luxurious hotel, eventually underwent a fascinating transformation. It metamorphosed into an exquisite, breathtakingly beautiful spa, showcasing unique and innovative design elements that reflect a deep-seated ethos.
To delve deeper into the intricate design process, the underlying philosophy, and the rich, cultural narrative that inspired this remarkable creation, you need to know what Kalaha is:
Kalaha, also known as Mancala, is one of the world’s oldest games.
The name “Kalaha” is inspired by the Kalahari Desert, a vast, enduring landscape in Southern Africa.
The game may have initially been a recreational activity during breaks from work, especially during planting or harvest seasons.
The rounded wooden pits mirror the shifting sands of the Kalahari, where movement and stillness coexist.
The game symbolizes life cycles, such as planting and harvesting, and reflects the interdependence between people and nature.
The practice of collecting and redistributing seeds in the board’s pits evokes the idea of community and collaboration.
Traditionally played on carved wooden boards, its distinct design features smooth, rounded indentations, each serving as a strategic pit for small stones or seeds.
These organic shapes, flowing and circular, represent the timeless connection between nature and human interaction, evoking simplicity and elegance in craftsmanship.
